Martingale collar

Martingale collars are useful for pressure-and-release training, teaching behaviours like sit, down-stay, and leash walking. They also make excellent backup collars, as a properly fitted martingale is no escape — dogs can’t back out of them.
If you're using one for heel work, I recommend rubber or biothane versions. They grip the fur slightly, helping the collar stay in place, unlike fabric martingales which tend to slip down the neck.
to add, for safety reasons, I recommend a martingale with a quick release clip.

Herm Sprenger
Prong Collar
When used correctly, with care and patience, prong collars can be a valuable training tool. They reduce the pressure a dog puts on the leash and minimize the physical effort needed to offer clear, directional guidance. Unlike flat collars, they evenly distribute pressure around the neck instead of directly on the trachea — making them a safer option when fitted and used properly.
Herm Sprenger prong collars are top of the line and highly recommended. For sensitive dogs, hypoallergenic options are available, along with black and brown finishes for a more subtle look.

Prong Collar quick release addition

To make the prong collar easier to use, you can remove the throat plate and replace it with a quick-release clip. This makes taking the collar on and off much simpler — especially for those with weak or finicky hands. If you've purchased a black prong, there is a matching version of this.

Extra Prong
collar links
Prong collars are designed to be fully customizable. Along with the correct link size, you can add or remove links to create a precise fit for your dog. The collar should sit snug, high on the neck, directly behind the ears. A proper fit makes a world of difference — both in safety and effectiveness.

safety strap / back up strap

You may need to back up a collar — especially a prong. Equipment can fail, things happen, and having something in place so your leash doesn’t completely disconnect is important for safety.
Honestly, it’s easy to make your own using a carabiner or an old clip and some paracord. But if you're looking for a quick, ready-made option to back up your prong collar (or any collar or harness), this is the go-to.
